Volcanic eruptions reshape Iceland's dynamic landscape
Another volcanic eruption occurred overnight from Wednesday to Thursday on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. As confirmed by local services, the red glow was visible from Reykjavik, the country's capital.
The Icelandic Meteorological Institute reported that the eruption created a fissure between 2.4 and 3.2 kilometres in length. The explosion was preceded by minor earthquakes, indicating increased seismic activity in the region.
Another volcanic eruption on the peninsula
This marks the tenth volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, with the previous one occurring at the end of August.
Due to the threat, about 60 people were evacuated from Grindavik. Most residents have not returned since earlier damage caused by lava flow. The town, currently protected by a barrier, was only reopened in October.
The nearby geothermal waters spa and the Blue Lagoon hotel, popular among tourists, have also been evacuated and closed. Nonetheless, Isavia, the operator of Keflavik International Airport, announced that the volcanic eruption did not affect air traffic and that flights are operating as scheduled.
