Alice Weidel's chancellery bid: AfD eyes Nord Stream reboot
Alice Weidel, leader of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), has been officially nominated as the party's candidate for chancellor in the Bundestag elections, which will take place on 23 February. Weidel announced that her group plans to reopen the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
Alice Weidel stated in her speech that the party aims to make Germany "strong, rich, and secure". To achieve this, she emphasised, the country's borders must be closed.
AfD in favour of repairing Nord Stream
Weidel reiterated her group's intention to reopen the Nord Stream pipeline.
We will restore Nord Stream to operation, declared the AfD leader.
"Repairing Nord Stream will cost between several hundred million to a few billion euros and could take several months to a few years of work. Even then, it's uncertain if all of this is feasible. AfD's promises in this area may thus be mere election rhetoric," commented the industry service energetyka24.com on AfD's pledges.
The AfD candidate for chancellor voiced opposition to renewable energy sources. - When we are in power, we will dismantle all wind turbines. Down with the windmills of shame - Weidel declared. The AfD leader's speech was met with delegates chanting: "Alice for Germany!"
This is the first time in the nearly 12-year history of AfD that the party has nominated its candidate for chancellor. The dpa agency noted that Weidel's candidacy carries more of a symbolic dimension because, despite the party's strong showing in recent polls, right-wing populists have little chance of forming part of the government after other parties declared they would not cooperate with it.
