Ancient Phoenician shipwreck discovery off Murcia coast
A groundbreaking discovery is taking place off the coast of Murcia, Spain. Near the city of Mazarrón, the wreck of a Phoenician ship from 2,600 years ago has been uncovered. "It is one of the most important ancient ships found intact in the world," said Carmen María Conesa, head of the Murcia Department of Culture.
The wreck, named Mazarrón II, dates to 610-580 BC, is approximately 8 metres long and 2 metres wide, and was loaded with lead ingots.
A special team, under the supervision of the University of Valencia, began the process of recovering the wreck in September 2024. Using advanced technology, including 3D modelling, divers carefully retrieved the ship's delicate remains.
They also found ceramics and remnants of the anchor.
