Banana peel: The secret to thriving orchids without fuss

Orchids are among the most beautiful potted plants, captivating with their exotic flowers and exceptional elegance. Although they are often considered finicky, understanding their needs and applying a few simple principles can make their care straightforward. One interesting method to support their growth and flowering is banana fertiliser.

Orchids prefer light, but not direct sunlight – a bright spot with diffused light, such as an east or west-facing windowsill, is ideal. They cannot tolerate overwatering – only water them when the roots and substrate are completely dry. It’s best to submerge the pot in water for about 10 to 15 minutes and then drain thoroughly.

These plants do not appreciate draughts or dry air – it’s worthwhile misting them occasionally (but not during flowering) or placing a humidifier nearby.

Natural fertiliser from banana peel

Instead of using store-bought fertilisers, you can try a homemade method to feed orchids. Banana peel is a natural source of potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium – elements necessary for flowering and healthy plant growth.

How to prepare the fertiliser?

  1. Take a fresh peel from a ripe banana.
  2. Cut it into smaller pieces.
  3. Place it in a jar and pour about half a litre of lukewarm water over it.
  4. Set aside for a few days in a shaded place.
  5. After this time, strain it – natural fertiliser for watering orchids is ready.

Such a solution can be used every two to three weeks, ideally during the growing period and preparation for flowering. The nutrients contained in this fertiliser support root development, intensify flower colour, and promote healthy leaf appearance.

Orchids do not require expensive fertilisers or specialised treatments – just a bit of attention and natural methods. Banana peel fertiliser is a simple, inexpensive, and ecological way to support flowering and strengthen the plant. With such care, your flowers can impress for many months.
