BMW driver charged after dramatic A1 motorway police chase
Following the accident on 9 April during a chase on the A1 motorway in the United Kingdom, seven police officers were taken to hospital. The 20-year-old BMW driver has been charged with dangerous driving and is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Saturday (19 April), reports the BBC.
Scenes reminiscent of an action movie unfolded on 9 April on the A1 motorway in the United Kingdom. At approximately 3 AM, Northumbria police officers initiated a chase after a BMW driver who was driving in a "risky manner".
According to the BBC, near Denton Burn in Newcastle, a collision occurred involving five police cars. As a result, seven officers were taken to hospital (all have since returned home). Neither the 20-year-old BMW driver nor the female passenger of the same age sustained injuries.
As described by the "Daily Mail", following the accident, the road was blocked for over 12 hours, and “glass and debris were strewn across all lanes.” One of the police cars had its roof and doors ripped off.
The 20-year-old driver to appear in court
According to police information reported by the BBC, 20-year-old Mazyar Azarbonyad from Sylvia Terrace in Durham is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Saturday to face a charge of dangerous driving.
Additionally, the 20-year-old was charged with, among other things, failing to stop the vehicle at a police officer’s demand and driving without a licence.
Subsequent to the accident, the 20-year-old female passenger was also arrested on charges of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. According to "Sky News", the woman does not face further consequences in relation to this case.
