Boost your immunity naturally with homemade beet syrup
During a cold, we often reach for garlic, onions, or honey. Few people know that natural remedies can be prepared to boost immunity and fight infections using a popular vegetable. Discover the benefits of beet syrup.
The autumn and winter months are when colds and infections occur more frequently. Many people seek simple yet effective ways to strengthen the body's defence against viruses. One such remedy is made from a popular vegetable. What are its effects, and how do you make it? We provide some tips.
What are the benefits of consuming beets?
Why should you reach for beets? This vegetable is not only tasty but, most importantly, healthy. Regular consumption can help fight anaemia due to its high iron content. Additionally, the presence of vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals such as magnesium and potassium, supports the body's immunity, which is especially important during the colder months.
Beets are also an excellent source of antioxidants. These chemical compounds protect our bodies from the harmful effects of free radicals, which contribute to cell ageing and the development of cancers.
How to prepare beet syrup?
Making homemade beet syrup is quite simple and doesn't require much culinary expertise. You only need a few ingredients. Beets, the main ingredient of the syrup, should preferably be chosen from organic sources to ensure the highest quality. For the syrup, you'll also need honey, which acts as a natural preservative and enhances the beet's effect. You can also add lemon, which, due to its high vitamin C content, aids in the absorption of iron found in beets, making the syrup even more effective.
How to make beet syrup? To prepare the syrup, simply wash the beets, peel them, and cut them into small cubes. Place the chopped beets in a glass jar and pour honey over them. It's important for the honey to evenly cover all the beet pieces. Then, seal the jar tightly and set it aside in a cool place for about 24 hours. After this time, the beets will release juice, which will become the base of our syrup.
How to consume beet syrup?
Taking two tablespoons daily, preferably in the morning and evening is recommended. This dose supports immunity and provides the body with essential nutrients. If cold symptoms occur, the dose can be increased to four tablespoons a day, which will help fight the infection faster.
What else does beet syrup work on? Besides supporting immunity, the syrup helps with expectoration, soothes a sore throat and hoarseness, and supports the function of the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
For which type of cough can beet syrup be used? This syrup alleviates symptoms of both dry and wet coughs.
Thanks to its natural composition, the syrup can even be consumed by children who are over three years old and not allergic to honey. It is an ideal solution for families who want to take care of their health naturally. Storing the syrup in the refrigerator keeps it fresh for about two weeks, so it's worth making it regularly to always have some on hand during periods of increased risk of illness.
What other benefits does drinking beet syrup bring?
Beet syrup has other health benefits besides its direct impact on immunity. Regular consumption of this mixture can support the digestive system because beets are rich in fibre, which helps improve digestion. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help combat inflammation in the body.
The benefits of regularly consuming beet syrup also include improved skin condition due to the wealth of vitamins and minerals.
