A towering festive fir felled by gusty winds
The Romanian city of Brașov proudly showcases the tallest natural Christmas tree in this part of the world yearly. However, pride turned to disappointment this time when a strong wind toppled the giant decoration. It's a miracle there are no reports of injuries.
The tree intended to adorn the central Piața Sfatului square in Brașov is one of the tallest firs in the area. On 29 November, the lights were ceremonially lit on it.
On 13 November, the fir, which grew in the communal agricultural areas of Poiana Brașov, was transported to the city market. The authorities proudly presented the large Christmas tree on their Facebook page even before it was decorated.
The Christmas tree fell to the ground, crowded with bystanders around
The top of the Christmas tree stood 26 metres above the square's surface. As reported by the organisers of the Christmas festivities inauguration in Brașov, the tree grew to a height of 29 metres, meaning it was anchored 3 metres deep in the ground.
It turns out this was not enough to secure the tallest festive installation in the town's history, or indeed all of Romania. On Monday, the wind toppled the approximately 17-tonne fir.
In the recording posted on platform X, you can see the massive tree falling to the ground. It was a close call from tragedy. The heavy holiday decorations come crashing down while being surrounded by many bystanders.
Large red baubles scattered everywhere. Representatives of the emergency services were immediately on the scene. With disbelief, officials approached the fallen gigantic Christmas tree.
