The 79-year-old president's haemorrhage was discovered on Monday evening after an MRI scan. Lula da Silva had previously complained of a headache.

He was transported to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, where he underwent a craniotomy. This procedure involves removing a piece of skull bone to access the brain and remove the haematoma.

Lula da Silva previously suffered a head injury

The surgery became necessary after an accident that occurred at the president's home at the end of October. Lula da Silva sustained a head injury, which required stitches. A minor brain haemorrhage was also identified.

The accident forced the president to cancel his trip to the BRICS summit in Kazan.

The operation proceeded smoothly without complications. The government reported that Lula da Silva is feeling well and is in the intensive care unit. His health condition is being monitored.
