The situation began on Sunday, 20th April, when the man was apprehended by the police on charges of shooting a resident, Rodrigo Chavez.
Seeking a more decisive and brutal solution, a group of local men, reportedly numbering around 200, dragged the man out of a police station in the Sucumbios province and lynched him.
The local police chief explained that the officers did everything in their power to protect the detainee.
Police statement following the detainee's death
Unfortunately the size of the mob exceeded the capacities of the seven police officers who were at the scene. There had been problems between the two men that died. The man we believe to be British had shot a local man, causing his death, he added.
Who was the murdered man?
The man's identity has not been officially confirmed yet. It is known that he worked as an English teacher and dealt with tourist reservations. The police are still investigating his identity and migration status.
