Car ploughs into crowd at Magdeburg Christmas market

In Magdeburg, in eastern Germany, there was an attack at the Christmas market on Friday evening. "A car drove into a group of people," said the spokesperson for the Saxony-Anhalt government to the MDR station. Numerous dramatic videos were posted online.

"Extensive police operations are currently underway at the Christmas market in Magdeburg. The Christmas market in the city centre is closed," the police reported.

The footage shows, among other things, a car forcefully driving into the crowd.

Emergency services and fire departments are on the scene.

The German public broadcaster MDR reported that "at least one person" has died, and many more were injured.

Approximately 50 to 70 people may have been injured on Friday evening in Magdeburg, in eastern Germany, where a car drove into a crowd at the Christmas market, reported the "Bild" newspaper portal.

According to information from the dpa agency obtained from government sources, the driver has been detained.
