ChatGPT surges past Instagram and TikTok in global downloads
ChatGPT from OpenAI has become the most downloaded app in the world. Notably, it has managed to surpass Instagram and TikTok. Is this a sign that artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of everyday life?
In March 2025, ChatGPT, an app created by OpenAI, earned the title of the most downloaded app globally. According to Appfigures Intelligence, it overtook popular social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
ChatGPT outpaces the competition
In March, ChatGPT recorded 46 million downloads, which represents an increase of 28% compared to February. This is also 148% more than in the first quarter of 2024. Consequently, the app dethroned Instagram, which came in second with 46 million downloads, and TikTok, which fell to third place.
The dynamic increase in popularity may be due to the introduction of new features and growing interest in artificial intelligence among users. The app's success demonstrates that more and more people are using AI tools not only at work but also in daily life. Analysts predict that if the trend continues, ChatGPT may maintain its leading position in the coming months.
Decline in TikTok’s popularity and overall download trend
TikTok, which was still the leader in February, recorded 45 million downloads in March. This is 3 million more than in February, but fewer than in March of the previous year. This decline may be related to the ban on using the app in the USA.
According to Appfigures Intelligence, the 10 most downloaded apps worldwide achieved a total of 339 million downloads in March. Although this is greater than in February, the number is lower than in March 2024, indicating an ongoing decline in app popularity.
