Chilean skydiver dies after parachute failure in Brazil
Dramatic incident in the city of Boituva near São Paulo in Brazil. During a skydiving jump, Carolina Muñoz Kennedy from Chile tragically died. The 40-year-old fell from a significant height as her parachute failed to open.
It is already known that the 40-year-old Carolina Muñoz Kennedy did not make a mistake during the jump. Her main parachute malfunctioned and did not open. Moreover, the woman was also unable to save herself with the emergency parachute.
The Chilean skydiver had hundreds of jumps to her credit. The experienced 40-year-old attempted to deploy the reserve parachute, but it did not open properly. She fell to the ground.
Numerous rescue services immediately appeared at the scene. Carolina Muñoz Kennedy survived the fall initially but suffered numerous extensive injuries. In critical condition, she was transported to the hospital. Despite their best efforts, doctors were unable to save her life. The 40-year-old passed away.
Investigators examine how the tragedy occurred
Investigators are currently exploring why the parachute malfunctioned and why the emergency chute did not operate correctly. Brazilian prosecutors have additionally ordered an autopsy of the woman.
Interestingly, skydiving is not regarded as the most hazardous sport in terms of the risk of fatalities. Research conducted for Teton Gravity Research in 2022 indicates that only 1 in 100,000 skydiving cases results in death.
A similar risk is associated with cycling (1 in 140,000). More hazardous activities include playing American football (1 in 50,000 cases results in death) or kayaking (risk 1 in 10,000).
