China unveils stealth fighter jet with advanced technology
On 16 April 2025, a test flight of the Chinese fighter jet J-XDS was conducted over Shenyang, in Liaoning Province. Photos from this event, published on Chinese social media platforms, sparked interest due to the absence of visible Pitot tubes, a key sensor for measuring airspeed.
Observers speculate that the J-XDS may be the second prototype of the Chinese sixth-generation fighter, developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, reports The Bulgarian Military. The absence of a Pitot tube may suggest the use of modern airspeed measurement systems, such as laser or radar technologies, aligning with China's aspirations to advance technologies in its aviation industry.
China tests new fighter jet
The J-XDS, also known as the J-50 or J-XD, is a twin-engine, tail-less stealth fighter designed for multi-role missions. Its first public appearance was on 26 December 2024, when it was spotted alongside the J-16 fighter. The design of the J-XDS, with distinctive lambda wings and air intakes, aims to enhance manoeuvrability and reduce radar visibility. The lack of Pitot tubes might be a deliberate effort to mislead observers and conceal the aircraft's true capabilities.
The J-XDS features Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) air intakes, improving the aircraft's stealth properties by reducing its radar signature. Under the fuselage, there are two main weapon bays, and additional side bays allow for carrying a diverse arsenal of weapons, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. The elongated nose houses an advanced Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) that aids in target detection and tracking.
While detailed performance data on the J-XDS have not been disclosed, its design suggests that it can reach supersonic speeds without the use of afterburners (supercruise), is highly manoeuvrable, and has advanced stealth capabilities. All of this indicates that the J-XDS may be China's answer to the US NGAD programme and European sixth-generation fighter initiatives.
