Chinese J‑36: Mystery fighter jet's low‑altitude debut shocks
A video has surfaced online showing the flight of the new Chinese J-36 fighter jet, flying at an extremely low altitude, just above people's heads.
In early April, a surprising video emerged on the internet showing the J-36 fighter jet flying merely a few metres above a busy motorway in China. This futuristic aircraft, considered a new generation of Chinese fighter jets, has sparked significant interest and speculation regarding its capabilities.
New generation Chinese fighter jet
The J-36, developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, first took to the skies at the end of December 2024. Since then, it has become a subject of fascination and speculation among military analysts. Although Chinese authorities have not officially confirmed its existence, the motorway footage provides the most revealing view yet of this enigmatic project.
It is estimated that the J-36 is about 22 metres long, with wings spanning nearly 20 metres. This aircraft is equipped with three engines, which is uncommon in modern combat aircraft. This configuration likely enables the J-36 to reach supersonic speeds without the need for afterburners.
Accidental leak or controlled demonstration?
The appearance of the video online raises questions about its origin. Is it an accidental leak or perhaps a deliberate show of strength by Beijing? Chinese authorities often control information about their military advancements, suggesting that this could be a well-thought-out strategy.
Technological capabilities of the J-36
The J-36 stands out with advanced design features that may include characteristics of sixth-generation fighters, such as enhanced radar stealth and artificial intelligence integration.
The J-36's flight over the motorway might be a signal to rivals, particularly in light of tensions between China and the USA. Considering the American NGAD programme, the Chinese demonstration could be an attempt to show that Beijing is not lagging in the arms race.
The footage of the J-36 is not only a display of technology but also a potential element of strategic play in the international arena, as reported by the Bulgarian Military portal. Its online appearance could influence other countries' modernisation plans closely watching the development of Chinese aviation.
