Colorado attacker charged with hate crime and explosives use
Mohammed Sabry Soliman is accused of attacking a march in Colorado, where participants were demanding the release of Israeli citizens from the Gaza Strip. He had been planning his actions for a year, using online videos to prepare Molotov cocktails. He claimed he wanted "to kill all Zionists."
Mohammed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian man, has been charged with a federal hate crime, attempted murder, and use of explosives. The attack occurred during a march in Colorado, where Soliman reportedly threw Molotov cocktails at the event's participants, according to the BBC.
Investigators say that Soliman planned the attack for a year, waiting for his daughter to finish school. During the interrogation, he admitted he wanted to "kill all Zionists" and did not rule out the possibility of conducting another attack. He claims that Zionists aim to take over Palestinian lands, which is why he feels no sympathy towards them.
The attack took place in Boulder, and among the victims was a Holocaust survivor. Twelve people, including four men and four women aged between 52 and 88, were taken to hospital with injuries varying from minor to serious.
Shouting "free Palestine," Soliman threw two Molotov cocktails at the crowd. He admitted to learning how to make Molotov cocktails from YouTube videos, as reported by a British newspaper. Near the site of the attack, 16 unexploded cocktails were discovered, along with a backpack containing petrol. The attack could have resulted in more severe consequences. Soliman had learned to shoot, but he was not granted a gun permit due to his immigrant status.
Authorities emphasise that there were no prior signals of a threat from Soliman. "We intend to hold Soliman accountable for his actions," said J. Bishop Grewell, acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, as quoted by the BBC.
Donald Trump commented on the attack in Colorado, stating online that such attacks will not be tolerated and that it serves as an example of why there is a need to "deport illegal, anti-American radicals."
The demonstration he targeted was organised by Run for Their Lives, an organisation aimed at raising awareness about Israeli hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.
