Cottage cheese: Daily delight or dietary dilemma?
Cottage cheese is a popular choice for both breakfast and dinner. It is rich in protein and calcium but also contains a significant amount of salt. Can it be eaten every day? Nutritionist Milena Nosek discussed this in detail with Onet.
Cittage cheese seems to be an ideal choice for those seeking to lose weight. It is low in calories, carbohydrates, and fat, leading to the belief that it can be consumed freely. But is this really the case?
Clinical nutritionist Milena Nosek, speaking with Onet, underlined that although cottage cheese is healthy, it may not be suitable for daily consumption by everyone. Those with high LDL cholesterol levels or hypertension should be particularly cautious and limit their intake.
— They should avoid consuming it in large quantities daily, especially those wanting to reduce body mass or those suffering from impaired lipid metabolism, hypertension, or oedema, due to its high sodium content — the expert explained.
The impact of granular curd on health
Nutritionist Milena Nosek highlights that cottage cheese is recommended as part of the diet if there are no food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance or a casein allergy.
— Cottage cheese can be included in a balanced diet without any special restrictions, provided there is no lactose intolerance, casein allergy, or other related issues — the expert clarified.
Those who aim to reduce their body weight or have lipid metabolism problems should monitor their consumption. The high sodium content can adversely affect individuals with hypertension and oedema.
What is the best way to eat cottage cheese?
Expert Milena Nosek advises combining cheese with complex carbohydrates and vegetables. For a sweet version, it pairs well with berries, seeds, nuts, honey, dried fruit, or nuts. For a savoury option, it's worth combining with whole-grain bread, vegetable oil, and sprouts.
Despite its benefits, granular curd does not complement all ingredients. Nosek advises avoiding combinations with citrus fruits, which can lessen its flavour. Due to its high sodium content, it is not advisable to add extra salt either to the product itself or to dishes prepared with it.
