Creative uses for coffee grounds in home and garden

Coffee grounds possess versatile applications—not only in the kitchen but also in cosmetics and home plant care. Especially amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, putting them to good use is worthwhile. Thanks to their unique properties, coffee grounds can quickly eliminate smudges on the kitchen sink as well as unpleasant odours, such as those lingering after frying fish.

Nearly all of us brew at least one cup of coffee a day. Whether you use a coffee maker, a moka pot, or brew Turkish coffee, the resultant waste is predominantly grounds that often end up in the bin. You can enrich your garden's organic mix by using them as compost. In urban areas, compost bins often become contaminated with refuse that should not be in the brown bin. Coffee grounds can be put to much better use at home in such cases.

What properties do coffee grounds have?

Once brewed, ground coffee is not fit for making another drink, but this doesn’t mean the beans are completely devoid of nutrients. The grounds remain rich in minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which positively affect plant growth.

Coffee increases soil acidity, creating a favourable environment for growing azaleas, hydrangeas, and rhododendrons. Coarsely ground beans improve soil structure, and the scent of coffee deters pests.

Use coffee to clean the kitchen

Coffee grounds are also excellent for cleaning the kitchen, such as after frying fish or meat. The grains act like a gentle sandpaper, allowing you to carefully clean the sink with them. Additionally, the aroma of coffee has the useful ability to absorb other odours, helping to clear the atmosphere after frying fish.

Coffee grounds in a home spa

You can create a home scrub from the fragrant leftovers of your morning cup. Simply mix the grounds with a bath gel and a touch of body lotion. Massage this mixture into your thighs, abdomen, and buttocks, then rinse with lukewarm water. Used regularly, this treatment not only cleanses the skin but also aids in reducing cellulite.

There is no need to wait for bath time. Coffee grounds are also worth using for regular hand washing. They effectively eliminate unpleasant odours, restoring an aromatic balance after chopping onions or garlic.
