Danish foreign minister to confront US over Greenland spy claims

The Danish Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, announced on Wednesday that he plans to summon the American ambassador in Copenhagen. This decision comes in response to an article published by the "Wall Street Journal," suggesting that the United States intends to increase its espionage activities in Greenland.

Rasmussen, while in Warsaw, expressed his concern about the article, emphasising that friends should not spy on each other. He stated that the matter is very serious and, therefore, the US ambassador will be summoned for a conversation at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Minister expressed hope that these claims could be refuted, while also emphasising that Denmark wishes to clearly present its position on this issue.

The article "raised a lot of concern, because friends don’t spy on each other," Rasmussen said in Warsaw. "This is very serious, so we will summon the ambassador for a meeting at the foreign ministry," said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

Does Trump want to take over Greenland?

According to the "Wall Street Journal," American intelligence agencies have been tasked with gathering information about the independence movement in Greenland and its stance on American resource exploitation on the island.

The newspaper also reports that these agencies are to identify individuals in Greenland and Denmark who support American claims to the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has repeatedly warned that he intends to take control of Greenland, citing security concerns. He has also not ruled out the possibility of using force to take over the island.
