Discovering the real purpose of the car's overhead handle

Many car users employ this feature in various ways. Some passengers hold onto it during travel, while others use it as a hanger. However, only a few are aware of its original purpose. Discover the real function of the handle above the door in a vehicle.

Although it is a common feature in all vehicles, its function remains unclear to many. Most people do not know the actual purpose of such handles in cars. However, manufacturers do not place them there arbitrarily.

It should be emphasised that car designers plan vehicles intentionally, collaborating with engineers to design cars that are not only aesthetic but, above all, safe and comfortable.

These handles are not designed to serve as hangers (there are other accessories for that purpose), and their primary function is not to provide a grip during sudden manoeuvres, as that role is fulfilled by seat belts and armrests. The actual function of the handles above the doors is entirely different.

The handles in vehicles are designed to assist people with mobility impairments, the elderly, and pregnant women, making it easier for them to get in and out of the vehicle. They allow these individuals to support their body weight, enabling them to assume a comfortable position. Therefore, if you are transporting people who have difficulty moving, recommending the use of these handles is advisable.

Occasionally, you might notice the absence of a handle above the driver's seat. This is because drivers are expected to keep their hands on the steering wheel rather than rely on the handle while driving. If they have difficulty getting in, they can lean on the steering wheel. Modern cars are also equipped with side airbags on the driver's side. Using the handle might cause injury in the event of airbag deployment.
