Milorad Dodik, the president of the Republic of Srpska, which is part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressed in an interview with the Austrian weekly "Profil" his belief that the country cannot endure as a single state. Dodik emphasised that Muslims residing in Bosnia and Herzegovina are pushing towards armed conflict.
In response to the journal's reporter comparing the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina to that preceding the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the leader of the Serbian region of the country asserted that "Bosnia and Herzegovina must disintegrate, but unlike others, he hopes the price for the nation's breakup will not ensure peace". "However, remember that in Bosnia and Herzegovina there are people forced to co-exist who do not wish to," he added.
The politician stressed that "if required, he can rely on the support of Vladimir Putin, who has assured him repeatedly that he remains loyal to his friends."
Dodik accused the High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, and Muslims of wanting to intern the Serbian population in concentration camps, referencing events from the Second World War. "Muslims seek conflict once more. They wish to bring jihadists here and instil sharia law," stated Dodik.
The political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina worsened after the court sentenced Dodik to one year in prison and prohibited him from holding public office for obstructing Schmidt's decisions. Subsequently, the parliament of the Republic of Srpska passed legislation opposing the actions of central Bosnia and Herzegovina institutions on its territory.
Dodik, who has been on the US sanctions list since 2022 for contravening the Dayton Peace Agreement, admitted to seeking independence for the Republic of Srpska. In April 2025, Austria and Germany imposed entry bans on their territories for key politicians from the Republic of Srpska, including Dodik.
