Earthquake in Morocco felt across Southern Spain and Portugal

Late on Monday evening in northern Morocco, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred. The tremors were also felt in southern Portugal and Spain.

The earthquake affected the Tangier-Tetouan region in Morocco. The epicentre was 10 kilometres underground, 26 kilometres northeast of Al-Kasr al-Kabir. So far, there is no information about any casualties or significant material damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 10:48 PM Greenwich Mean Time. Residents of cities such as Faro, Albufeira, Loulé, Huelva, and Cádiz felt the tremors, which were located on the Iberian Peninsula. The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) estimated the tremors to have a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were strong enough for southern Portugal and Spain residents to feel them distinctly, yet even in this region, they did not cause significant damage. There are also no injuries or casualties.

On the Richter scale, an earthquake between 4.9 and 5.4 magnitude means everyone feels it but causes minimal damage.
