Energy balls: A healthy twist on your favourite dessert

Can a tasty dessert be healthy? It can indeed, and I'm not just talking about a plate of fresh fruit. The culinary masterpiece I'm about to introduce, results from combining oats, cocoa, and a few other ingredients whose calorie content needn't concern you!

Energy balls are popular among enthusiasts of "fit" food. Today, this fancy snack has become a regular dessert in my home as well.

How did I come across the recipe for energy balls? Before they became a dessert idea, they served another purpose – a snack for kids to take in their lunchboxes. In this role, the balls also excel. The ingredients they contain – oats, cocoa, nuts, and dates – provide energy, boost mood, and simultaneously replace the sugar- and palm oil-laden colourful rubbish from supermarkets that our unsuspecting children often snack on.

I transform the oats and other additions into a delicious dessert in just a few moments. The whole family has grown fond of this treat so much that energy balls now appear as a delicacy during holiday gatherings. Below, I share the most straightforward recipe for this wonder. Good luck!

Energy balls – a simple oat dessert

Ingredients:

  • 200g of regular oats,
  • 150g of dried dates,
  • 150g of mixed nuts,
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa,
  • a pinch of nutmeg,
  • a pinch of ginger,
  • a pinch of cinnamon,
  • Additionally: coconut flakes.

Preparation:

  1. Start by soaking the dates. Pour boiling water over them and leave them for an hour. After that, blend them using a blender.
  2. Crush the nuts and oats in the same manner. Place all the ingredients in one bowl. Add a tablespoon of cocoa, a bit of nutmeg, ground ginger, and cinnamon. As this dish can be adjusted as you go, you can adjust everything to taste.
  3. Finally, form balls from the prepared mixture and coat them in coconut flakes.
  4. Place them on a plate and put them in the fridge – in my opinion, this dessert tastes best when cold. Enjoy!
