EU leaders vow to boost defence funding amid US tensions
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasised that we are all ready to accelerate actions to increase defence funding. On Monday, an informal summit of EU leaders focused on security issues in Brussels. The President of the European Commission indicated that the Union is open to dialogue with the USA but will not be intimidated by Donald Trump's administration.
Antonio Costa summarised the informal summit held in Brussels, discussing the priorities of capabilities, funds, and partnerships.
The President of the European Council noted that the leaders at the meeting agreed that Europe needs to ensure "even greater defence funding."
Costa stressed that it is in Europe's interest to continue supporting Ukraine in its struggle.
We will respond firmly to the USA
The President of the European Council expressed confidence that the United States remains a trusted ally and partner, emphasizing the long-term strength of this relationship. Acknowledging existing challenges and differing perspectives, they stressed the importance of addressing these issues and seeking solutions while steadfastly upholding European values and interests.
The President of the European Commission also addressed this issue.
Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the significant stakes involved, highlighting the importance of pragmatic cooperation with the United States. She stated that the European Union is prepared to engage constructively with the Donald Trump administration. However, she made it clear that any unfair actions against the EU would be met with a firm response. She also expressed scepticism about the benefits of Trump's policies toward Mexico and Canada.
She also indicated that defence spending must increase.
The President of the European Commission highlighted that this would require increased public spending.
According to von der Leyen, a chance for joint defence development lies in cooperation with Ukraine's defence industry.
Tusk: Everyone is ready
The Polish Prime Minister expressed great satisfaction, stating that the meeting was highly productive from the Polish presidency's perspective. They emphasized the clear commitment to full solidarity in strengthening defence.
The meeting, convened during the Polish presidency of the EU Council, focused on security, which is also the key theme of the Polish presidency.
Tusk emphasized that a key decision was the collective readiness to accelerate efforts to increase defence funding. He also underscored the widespread recognition of the necessity of operating the Eastern Shield.
The heads of state and government of the "twenty-seven" countries met on Monday in Brussels for an informal meeting to seek funding for defence.
Von der Leyen also announced an EU-UK summit on defence, which will be held in the UK in May.
