EU Parliament considers revoking Hungary's voting rights
Members of Parliament from the Volt party propose stripping Hungary of its voting rights in the EU due to its obstruction of joint decisions. The plan, which is now set to be presented to European leaders, is reported by the Politico portal.
According to Politico, the document consists of nine points, including the proposal to appoint Kaja Kallas as the full-fledged Foreign Minister of the EU.
Proposals for changes in the EU
The document includes proposals to establish a joint European army and revise EU treaties to introduce new defence competencies and prepare for the Union's expansion. Hungary has been repeatedly criticized in the European Parliament for violating the rule of law and democratic standards.
The European Union accuses Viktor Orbán's government of restricting judicial independence, media freedom, and civil society rights. Consequently, Brussels has frozen billions of euros in funds for Budapest, demanding compliance with conditions that strengthen democratic institutions.
At the same time, Hungary is using its veto power to block important EU decisions, including those related to aid for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. This has prompted members of the European Parliament to call for the country's voting rights to be removed from the EU Council. The Volt party has previously initiated a plan to impose sanctions on Budapest for actions contrary to the interests of the European Union.
