Lilacs, celebrated for their intense fragrance and stunning blossoms, are some of the most favoured flowers for vases. Their presence can bring a touch of spring and freshness to any home. Unfortunately, cut lilacs quickly lose their allure, presenting a challenge for plant enthusiasts. However, there are tried and tested ways to enjoy their beauty for a longer period.

How to extend the longevity of lilacs in a vase?

To keep lilacs fresh in a vase for longer, cut the branches at the appropriate time. Ideally, do this very early in the morning or in the evening. Use sharp tools for cutting the lilacs.

The next step is to cut the stems at an angle of about 45 degrees. This enhances the flowers' ability to absorb water, vital for their extended longevity. It's also essential that the vase is clean. Before placing the lilac branches into the vase, remove some of the leaves. This will prevent them from decaying in the water.

The water in which the lilacs are placed is equally important. It's best to use lukewarm, settled water that does not harm the delicate stems. Regularly changing the water, preferably daily, is crucial for maintaining the freshness of lilacs. This practice helps prevent the build-up of bacteria that can hasten the wilting of flowers.

What to add to the vase to make lilacs last longer?

There are several home tricks that can help prolong the freshness of lilacs. One method involves adding an aspirin tablet to the water, which lowers the pH and prevents bacterial growth. Another approach is using sugar, vinegar, and a copper coin, which serve as natural preservatives and inhibit the development of bacteria leading to decay.

To keep lilacs fresh, it's advisable not to place the vase in areas exposed to direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators. Keeping the flowers in a cool and shaded area can significantly extend their lifespan.
