Fake military drafts target Ukrainians, warns foreign office

In response to reports of fake letters being sent to Ukrainian citizens, the Office for Foreigners has clarified that it is not responsible for issuing summonses to military service. This clarification was made in an announcement on its website, which also included a scan of one of the fraudulent letters.

According to the report, Ukrainians have been receiving letters from individuals impersonating the Office for Foreigners. "The letters call on Ukrainian citizens to undergo military service, threatening legal action and extradition," the announcement states, with the Office emphasising that it is not the source of these letters.

The Office published a scan of such a letter, which is titled a "second summons to appear for military service".

"In accordance with the applicable laws of Ukraine, specifically the Act on Military Service, and in connection with the ongoing mobilisation, please note that as a Ukrainian citizen, you are informed that between 17th and 31st December 2024, we plan to visit your place of residence," the letter claims.

The purpose of this visit is to escort you to the mobilisation point, in relation to your military service obligation in the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the fraudulent letter continues.

The letter further states: "According to Ukrainian regulations, individuals summoned to military service are required to respond immediately to the summons. We expect you to take all necessary steps to fulfil this obligation."

At the conclusion of the fake letter, there is mention of supposed consequences. It asserts that if a Ukrainian citizen does not comply with the summons voluntarily, it may lead to an arrest warrant, among other things.

"We remind you that individuals evading military service may face legal and criminal consequences, including extradition to Ukraine," the fake summons concludes.
