During his visit to London, President of Finland Alexander Stubb highlighted the need for Europe to prepare for future dialogue with Russia. He emphasised that although relations with Moscow remain tense, Russia will remain Finland's neighbour, which requires a long-term strategy and readiness for talks at the appropriate time.

Stubb noted that any potential contact with Vladimir Putin should be carefully coordinated at the international level. After meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he stressed that the condition for dialogue is a sustainable ceasefire and stable peace in Ukraine.

The Finnish president also summarised his recent diplomatic activities, including a visit to the United States, where he held talks with former President Donald Trump, and meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron. He noted that further sanctions against Russia will depend on compliance with the conditions of a potential ceasefire.

Commenting on discussions in the U.S., Stubb noted that Trump considers sanctions a powerful means of applying pressure. In this context, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is preparing a new package of sanctions in case Russia does not comply with the ceasefire conditions.

Finland, on the other hand, proposed a date for a full ceasefire in Ukraine on 20 April, which would have symbolic significance with the upcoming Easter holidays.

The Finnish president also expressed satisfaction with the UK's declarations regarding strengthening cooperation with Europe post-Brexit. London, as one of the first countries, declared readiness to send troops to Ukraine to ensure its security after peace is established.
