What do you need to know?

  • Detention at the cosmodrome: Three Spaniards and an Australian tried to illegally enter the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and local authorities detained them.
  • Authorities' response: The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued an official statement.
  • History of incidents: This is not the first occurrence of illegal entry into Baikonur. Previously, a French national, a German, and a group comprising Dutch and Belgian individuals were detained there.

Why does the Baikonur Cosmodrome attract tourists?

The Baikonur Cosmodrome, established in 1955, is the oldest and largest facility globally. Located in central Kazakhstan, it covers an area of approximately 76 by 90 kilometres. It houses numerous assembly and launch complexes as well as two airports. Although Kazakhstan owns the cosmodrome, Russia leases it for its space programme, costing them over $100 million annually.

What are the consequences of illegal entry?

Illegal entry into the Baikonur Cosmodrome can lead to detention by local authorities and, in some cases, more severe consequences. In June 2024, a French tourist died there from dehydration while trying to enter one of the buildings. His companion was detained and released after questioning. Such incidents demonstrate that the cosmodrome, despite its allure, is a highly secure location.

Are incidents at Baikonur frequent?

Several instances of illegal entry into the Baikonur Cosmodrome have been recorded in recent years. At the end of last year, a French and a German national were detained there, and earlier, two Dutch and a Belgian individual were involved in similar incidents.
