German Defence Minister warns: Stopping Ukraine aid risks wider conflict
Boris Pistorius warns against ending aid for Ukraine, as this could jeopardise its sovereignty. "That's right, it's not our war, but it can become ours," he emphasises.
The German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, expressed concern over the prospect of ending support for Ukraine grappling with Russian aggression. During a speech in Peine, Lower Saxony, he noted, "If we stop supporting Ukraine tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow will be the end of Ukraine, the end of a sovereign, free state in the middle of Europe."
The head of the German defence department stressed that Ukraine must be able to act from a position of strength, but it will also have to negotiate with Russia in the future. Responding to calls to cease support for the embattled nation, he emphasised that although the conflict is currently in Ukraine, it could spread further.
That's right, it's not our war, but it can become ours. Anyone listening to Putin could only come to one conclusion: "Putin is preparing" - cites his words from the weekly "Zeit" portal.
The minister also warned of Russia's preparations for potential military actions. - Pistorius stated that anyone who listens to Russian leader Vladimir Putin can come to only one conclusion: Putin is preparing. - We don't know if and when, but he is preparing — he added.
Russia increases arms production
Pistorius highlighted the increased arms production in Russia, including the growing number of tanks, which could pose a threat to Europe. - It creates conditions to threaten us seriously, he said, referring to the observed actions of Vladimir Putin.
Putin spoke of a "serious, relentless fight for a new world order." Although he may never act on this, Pistorius, as the Defence Minister, is unwilling to take that risk. He is not alone in this assessment. Similar concerns are also being voiced in Poland and the Baltic capitals.
