Google tests AI‑exclusive search results mode with Gemini 2.0
The Google search engine seldom experiences significant changes or features groundbreaking innovations; however, we might soon observe a pilot project that aligns with that description. Google has commenced testing an "AI Only" view, in which the search results are entirely generated by Gemini 2.0.
Google introduces changes to its search engine related to artificial intelligence, clearly communicating to users that results created by Gemini 2.0 are at least as important as traditional web results. For users participating in Search Labs, Google is experimentally enabling a new "AI Mode" tab. This tab appears as the first option in Google and provides solely AI-compiled results.
According to Google, this approach will enable the retrieval of answers even for complex queries, which Gemini 2.0 will interpret effectively. In essence, AI-generated results are intended to be especially useful in scenarios requiring comparisons, exploring multiple topics, and generating explanations.
Although this has not been explicitly confirmed and remains speculative among users, one might wonder whether Google intends to introduce AI mode as the default setting in its search engine in the future (and likely years rather than months from now). This change could transform our perception of internet searching as we currently understand it.
Though traditional search results remain accessible, in many instances, the Gemini-generated answer tailored to a specific query might prove more beneficial for the user. Ultimately, the typical Google user will likely be interested in the answer, not necessarily the underlying source, assuming the answer's credibility can be verified beforehand.
