Harvard clashes with Trump over budget cuts
Donald Trump and his administration may face legal action. Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the United States government. The university authorities are demanding a block on the budget cuts, which amount to several billion dollars.
The conflict between Donald Trump’s administration and the authorities of Harvard University began a few days ago. Last week, the university rejected the U.S. President's demands to limit initiatives on diversity and anti-Semitism on its campus.
In response, Trump blocked the transfer of approximately $2.2 billion (£1.6 billion) to the university and also threatened to challenge the university’s tax-exempt status.
Harvard’s President, Alan M. Garber, stated that the decision by the American President could have very far-reaching scientific consequences for the university. The White House responded by criticizing Harvard, describing it as an institution bogged down by bureaucracy, run by officials, and profiting at the expense of American families.
Harvard authorities want to block Trump’s decision
Harvard University authorities want the U.S. federal court to block President Donald Trump’s decision to withhold the approximately £1.6 billion budget grant. On Monday (21st April), the university filed a lawsuit demanding the return of the withheld funds.
According to Harvard researchers, cited by the BBC, the blocking of funds could result in, among other things, the halting of research on paediatric cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease.
Harvard University is not the only institution Trump wants to battle. The American President suspended approximately £746 million to Cornell University and approximately £380 million to Brown University. Meanwhile, Columbia University agreed to modify its programs after the blocking of approximately £298 million in grants.
