Geraniums are relatively low-maintenance plants, making them manageable for almost anyone. During the flowering period, they impress with a range of colours: from whites to pinks, reds, and purples.

How can you care for seedlings to ensure they grow thick and are abundantly covered with flowers in the season? Here are a few tricks well-known to experienced gardeners.

Prepare homemade fertiliser. Geraniums will love it

People who tend to geraniums year after year know well how effective apple fertiliser is. What is behind its success? This homemade mixture contains plenty of valuable nutrients, such as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. How do we prepare it? We only need a litre of water and four apples.

The process begins by peeling the apples, placing the peels in a jar, and covering them with water. Then, gently cover the jars and set them aside in a shaded place for about four days. After this time, strain the mixture, and combine the resulting liquid with water at a 1:1 ratio. Water the geraniums with the mixture once a week.

Reliable geranium care

Geraniums require regular watering, especially on hot days. To avoid overwatering, it is recommended to water them in the morning and evening. These plants store water well, so excess can lead to root rot. Pots with drainage help remove excess water, which is crucial for the healthy growth of geraniums.

To make geraniums bloom abundantly, it's worth using homemade fertilisers. In addition to the apple peel fertiliser, sugar or iodine can be used to prepare nutrients. Regular fertilisation supports growth and blooming, and also boosts the plants' resistance to diseases. Thanks to these methods, geraniums will adorn balconies all summer long.
