Homemade coffee fertiliser revitalises winter-weary thuja trees

You should fertilise thuja trees three times a year. The first fertiliser should be applied to these plants no later than April. It turns out that the ideal nutrient mix, which provides them with the necessary nutrients, can be prepared at home with only two ingredients.

Thuja trees may be weakened after winter. Sometimes late frosts take a toll, causing branches to freeze and new shoots to turn brown. Fortunately, there is a solution to these problems—homemade fertiliser that strengthens thuja trees and ensures they grow dense and green.

In the spring, use homemade fertilisers. Thuja trees will strengthen immediately

It turns out that a great strengthening fertiliser for thuja can be found in every coffee lover's home. Nothing nourishes thuja trees in the spring as well as a fertiliser made from coffee grounds. Simply mix two tablespoons of coffee grounds with just under a litre of water. Then let the mixture sit overnight to "blend" the ingredients. The next day, strain the liquid from the grounds and use the resulting nutrient mix to water the thuja trees once every two weeks.

Why does a nutrient mix containing an extract from coffee grounds work so well? Its composition includes nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—all the components that strengthen roots and shoots, as well as those responsible for plant growth. Regular watering of the thuja trees will give them a beautiful deep green colour.

Proper care of thuja throughout the year

After the first fertilisation of the thuja trees, which should be done no later than April, the next time for this task is around late May to early June—when we use multi-component fertilisers that provide the right amount of vitamins and minerals.

The last, third fertilisation of thuja should take place in July. At this time, however, we must remember to avoid fertilisers containing nitrogen, as this component extends plant blooming. In the case of thuja, this may prevent the plant from preparing for the upcoming winter. To nourish thuja in August, choose fertilisers that contain potassium or phosphorus. After the last nutrient dose, focus on proper pruning and watering.
