How to unclog your sink: Simple home remedies that work
Maintaining a sink in good condition can be a challenge. Sometimes just a moment of inattention is enough for the water to stop draining and for an unpleasant smell to start emanating from the pipes. How can this be remedied? Fortunately, we don't always need a specialist's help.
Keeping the sink clean is key to avoiding drainage problems. Regular cleaning and ensuring that food scraps don't end up in the sink are essential. However, in the daily rush, it's easy to neglect this. As a result, food scraps, sugary drinks, and coffee grounds end up in the drain, starting to rot and leading to clogs.
Home remedies for a clogged sink
Before calling a plumber, it's worth trying to solve the problem yourself. There are many home methods that can help. Often, they don't require additional purchases because the necessary supplies are already at home.
One popular method is using washing-up liquid. This product effectively dissolves grease and dirt, making it ideal for unclogging sinks. Depending on the degree of clogging, different methods can be applied. For minor issues, simply pour in some washing-up liquid, wait for 10 minutes, and rinse with water.
In case of a complete blockage, first, flush the drain with hot water, then pour 200-300 millilitres of washing-up liquid. After waiting at least 15 minutes, rinse again with boiling water. The combination of hot water and detergent should solve the problem.
Prevent the problem before it starts
To avoid future problems, it’s a good idea to pour a small amount of washing-up liquid into the drain every day. It's best to do this in the evening when you don't plan to use the tap anymore, allowing the detergent to work overnight.
If washing-up liquid doesn't work, you can use vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Simply pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda or half a cup of vinegar into the drain, cover it, and wait at least 30 minutes. Finally, rinse with boiling water. This will make the sink as good as new!
