The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) organised raids in New York on Tuesday, focusing on undocumented immigrants. According to NBC, the operation was supported by the local police.

These raids are part of Donald Trump's administration's strategy to increase the number of deportations and make them highly visible, which is why the authorities are focusing on large cities.

Increased ICE operations in the USA

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, was present during the arrest of at least one person in the Highbridge neighbourhood of the Bronx. According to the Furman Centre at New York University, the serious crime rate in Highbridge exceeds the citywide average.

Although city and state laws prohibit police from engaging in immigration law enforcement, New York officers were part of the Department of Homeland Security (HSI) task force investigating violations of federal criminal law.

The arrested person was wanted for serious crimes such as kidnapping, assault, and burglary.

We will not hesitate to partner with federal authorities to bring violent criminals to justice — just as we have done for years. Our commitment to protecting our city’s law-abiding residents, both citizens and immigrants, remains unwavering — emphasised New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Controversies surrounding Trump administration actions

NBC reports that according to the latest data from the Trump administration, about half of the people arrested by ICE have no criminal background. The President of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), Murad Awawdeh, criticised these actions as a “publicity raid.” He published pictures and videos of Kristi Noem in a bulletproof vest leading the operation in the Bronx.

Awawdeh argued: “No matter how the Trump administration spins this enforcement, it is not about public safety — it is about instilling fear in our immigrant communities.”

Recall: Donald Trump announced that he intends to conduct mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. According to the "Wall Street Journal," Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to involve 100 to 200 officers in these actions. The operation targets large metropolises in the United States.
