India strengthens ties with Russia through T‑72 engine deal
The Ukrainian portal Defense Express reports that India has opted to purchase engines for T-72 tanks from Russia despite earlier plans to sell them.
In September 2024, India announced its plan to sell most of its 2,400 T-72 tanks, prompting many questions about the future of these vehicles. However, on 7 March 2025, India signed a contract with the Russian company Rosoboronexport to supply engines valued at $248 million.
New engines for T-72
Defense Express notes that India is likely planning to equip its T-72 tanks with 1,000 horsepower engines used in T-90 tanks (the previous T-72 power units had 750 horsepower). The contract includes the delivery of ready-made engines and the transfer of technology to the Indian company AVANI. India's decision to purchase engines from Russia did not result in sanctions from Western countries.
Cooperation with Russia
In February 2025, India also announced the purchase of Russian 3M54 Kalibr anti-ship missiles. Similar to the engines, this transaction did not face sanctions. India's cooperation with Russia in arms raises concerns about strengthening the Russian defence industry.
It is reported that India currently owns 3,740 tanks, of which approximately 2,400 are T-72s. Cooperation with Russia may impact the increase in Russia's production capabilities concerning tanks, which could be significant in the context of the conflict with Ukraine.
It should be remembered that the T-72 tank's history dates back to the 1970s. Since then, the vehicle has undergone many modernisations. Among them, the T-72B3 version stands out, gaining recognition for its modern Sosna-U sight and enhanced reactive armour. The T-72B3 model is equipped with a 2A46M cannon calibre of 125 mm, supported by PKT machine guns with calibres of 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm. These modifications have significantly increased its effectiveness on the battlefield.
