Is the 'Western alliance' unraveling?: US‑Russia ties deepen
The Swedish daily "Dagens Nyheter" analyses the evolving relations between the USA and Europe, highlighting a growing rapprochement between the United States and Russia. Does the West, in its traditional sense, still exist?
The Swedish daily "Dagens Nyheter" in its latest commentary emphasizes that the concept of the West, as traditionally understood, is ending. According to the newspaper, the United States increasingly aligns with Russia, which distances it from Europe.
The article refers to statements from the Kremlin spokesperson, who claims that Donald Trump's foreign policy aligns with Moscow's stance. This may mean that easing tensions in transatlantic relations may not be possible shortly.
Trump's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, suggested that Ukraine requires a leader capable of negotiating with both Washington and Moscow to resolve the conflict.
"Trump is following the same path as Putin," notes "Dagens Nyheter."
Europe in the face of challenges
The daily also quotes Trump's remarks during a conversation with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting he "has no cards to play". In light of this statement, the question arises as to whether Europe can provide Ukraine with the necessary military, political, and economic support.
Poland's Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, highlights Europe's military potential, which is not fully utilised due to a lack of political will. Dagens Nyheter quotes him on the paradox of 500 million Europeans seeking protection from 300 million Americans against 140 million Russians.
The Swedish columnist underscores that Europe lacks imagination and courage, which impedes its ability to act independently on the international stage. Given changing relations with the USA, the continent must find new ways to strengthen its position.
