International pressure on Israel and the Netanyahu government has reached unprecedented levels, even from Western allies who traditionally support the country. On Wednesday, a significant incident occurred on the West Bank.

Israeli soldiers mistakenly fired warning shots at diplomats representing the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, and other countries. This group of international diplomats and activists was visiting the city of Jenin in the West Bank when they allegedly came under fire from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

Reactions to the incident

The Palestinian Authority, which administers the West Bank, issued a statement condemning the actions of the Israeli soldiers. The statement alleged that the IDF "deliberately fired upon an accredited diplomatic delegation."

Meanwhile, the IDF admitted in its statement that the diplomats had permission to be in the area but had departed from the "approved route." They confirmed that "warning shots were fired."

"The IDF regrets the inconvenience caused," said the statement. The army announced that an investigation would be conducted into the matter.

Diplomats on the scene

Among the diplomats present were representatives from the EU, Portugal, Morocco, Brazil, Austria, Japan, Canada, India, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Romania, France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, China, Egypt, and Jordan. Fortunately, none were injured.

Video footage shows the group of diplomats running towards their vehicles, some of which were marked with flags of their respective countries.

Consequences for Israel

It is likely that the countries involved in the incident will soon summon Israeli ambassadors in their capitals, at a time when Israel is already grappling with international isolation. The country has recently expanded military operations in the Gaza Strip, and reports of hunger in the enclave further complicate the situation.

The incident in Jenin will certainly not aid Israel’s international standing, especially amid increasing isolation on the global stage. Many of the diplomats were from Global South countries, which have long opposed Israel's policy towards Palestinians.
