Matcha coffee: The energizing blend of tea and java
Matcha coffee is a fantastic alternative to traditional coffee, especially if you want to combine coffee's energy with green tea's beneficial properties.
Matcha is powdered green tea leaves that are full of antioxidants, amino acids (like L-theanine), and vitamins. It also helps improve concentration and provides energy in a more stable and lasting way than caffeine. Combining it with coffee offers a strong dose of energy, but without the sudden drops that can sometimes occur after drinking regular coffee.
Matcha coffee - step by step recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of matcha (preferably high quality)
- 125 millilitres of hot water (not boiling, about 80°C)
- 125 millilitres of freshly brewed coffee (preferably espresso, though brewed coffee works too)
- 1-2 teaspoons of plant-based milk (e.g., almond, coconut, oat) or cow's milk, if you prefer
- Optional: honey, maple syrup, stevia, or another sweetener to taste
Preparation:
- Brew an espresso or your favourite coffee. Ensure it is strong, as matcha will gently balance its flavour.
- In a small bowl or cup, mix 1 teaspoon of matcha with about 125 millilitres of hot water. Use a whisk (chasen) if you have one, or a classic milk frother to achieve a smooth, lump-free paste. If special equipment is unavailable, a regular teaspoon and vigorous mixing will suffice.
- When the coffee is ready, pour it into a cup. Then add the prepared matcha paste and mix thoroughly until the ingredients are combined.
- If you prefer a creamier drink, heat and froth the plant-based milk or cow's milk, and then pour it into the coffee.
- You can add honey, maple syrup, or other sweeteners. Matcha coffee has a subtle, slightly grassy flavour that pairs well with a natural sweetener.
- Your matcha coffee is ready to drink! Enjoy its flavour - full, yet gentle and energising.
Variants:
- Matcha latte: Make matcha coffee, but instead of regular coffee, prepare milk (e.g., almond) with matcha and then add espresso. You'll get a drink similar to a matcha latte, but with a hint of coffee.
- Iced matcha coffee: If you prefer cold beverages, make matcha coffee cold. Pour the brewed coffee and prepared matcha into a glass with ice. You can add cold plant-based milk and a little sweetener.
Health benefits
Matcha, Japanese green tea powder, is rich in antioxidants such as catechins and EGCG, which help fight free radicals, reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. It also contains caffeine and L-theanine, which improve brain function, support relaxation, and reduce stress. Regular consumption of matcha can boost metabolism, support fat burning, and lower bad LDL cholesterol levels.
Matcha also has calming properties thanks to L-theanine, which helps maintain appropriate levels of serotonin and dopamine in the body. This improves mood, reduces stress, and promotes a relaxed and calm state. Additionally, matcha supports heart health by lowering bad LDL cholesterol levels and has anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic effects.
Regular matcha consumption also improves bone density and increases muscle strength, helping to prevent osteoporosis and fractures. With vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and selenium, matcha bolsters the immune system, acting nourishing and strengthening.
Matcha coffee is a truly delicious and healthy alternative that combines the energy of coffee with the gentleness and health benefits of matcha. Try it and be surprised by its unique taste.
