What do you need to know?

  • Elon Musk supports the idea of establishing a free trade zone between the USA and Europe, which would mean removing tariffs between these regions.
  • Donald Trump announced new tariffs on imports from the EU, causing reactions both in Europe and in international markets.
  • The European Union plans to respond to the American tariffs in a calm and organised manner, as announced by Maroš Šefčovič.

What are Elon Musk's proposals?

During a conference in Florence organised by the Italian League party, tech billionaire Elon Musk proposed establishing a free trade zone between the USA and Europe. Musk emphasised that the ideal solution would be the elimination of tariffs, effectively creating a free trade area between Europe and North America. In a conversation with League leader Matteo Salvini, Musk also expressed support for greater freedom of movement between these regions.

"Ideally, both Europe and the United States should move to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America," said Musk.

What are the reactions to the new US tariffs?

The new tariffs announced by Donald Trump, including 20% tariffs on imports from EU countries, have elicited mixed reactions. Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has called for a de-escalation of tensions with Washington, warning against retaliatory measures. Meanwhile, the European Union, as announced by EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, plans to respond to the American tariffs in a calm and organised manner.

Are we threatened with a global trade war?

The announcement of new tariffs by the USA has caused declines in stock markets, both in the United States and internationally. Many countries have announced retaliatory measures, increasing the risk of a global trade war. Donald Trump described the new tariffs as an "economic revolution," claiming they will bring industry and jobs back to the USA.
