When I have a bit of roast left over, meat from a broth, or no idea what to serve with baked fish, I always prepare this sauce. It enhances the flavour of many dishes and tastes great both hot and cold. Most importantly, the main ingredient for this sauce is something I always have in the fridge.
What ingredient am I talking about? Mustard, which we most often use as an addition to sausages, cold meats, sandwiches, eggs, or vegetables. Based on it, you can also prepare a delicious hot sauce. The list of remaining ingredients is short, and the preparation method is incredibly simple.
Simple recipe for sauce
Sauces are often associated with complicated recipes, most frequently from French cuisine. Dishes from the Loire are famous for them. However, there are sauces that everyone can manage. Among them is mustard sauce. Its varieties can be found in the cuisines of many countries, demonstrating its versatility and deliciousness.
What to know about mustard seeds?
No wonder mustard sauce is so eagerly used. Its main ingredient, mustard, is considered one of the most popular condiments in the world. Known since ancient times, it is made from mustard seeds, which belong to the cabbage family. Their seeds are rich in protein, fatty acids, and B vitamins.
Mustard comes in three varieties. The mildest is white. Any type of mustard can be used for the sauce, but Dijon works best. You can also use French mustard with whole mustard seeds.
What ingredients for mustard sauce?
In addition to mustard, you will also need stock, butter, and flour to prepare the sauce. It is made based on a roux, in which there should not be the slightest lumps. If you want the sauce to have a creamier consistency, you can add cream to it.
The preparation method is quick and simple. Therefore, such an addition is useful in an emergency situation, such as when there's a bit of dried meat left from lunch. It will also work well in more refined dishes. It's worth trying it with baked salmon.
