Cultivating tomatoes and cucumbers in a home garden is a popular activity that brings a lot of satisfaction. These vegetables are not only delicious but also rich in nutrients, making them an excellent addition to a daily diet.

However, tomatoes and cucumbers are susceptible to various diseases, including late blight, which can quickly destroy crops. Late blight poses a serious threat, capable of decimating crops in a short period. Therefore, it's beneficial to use natural protection methods against vegetable diseases.

Fungal diseases of cucumbers and tomatoes

Fungal diseases pose a significant threat to cucumber and tomato crops, often leading to considerable yield losses. One of the most common diseases is late blight, which attacks both leaves and fruits, causing them to brown and rot.

Another severe disease is powdery mildew, which manifests as a white coating on leaves, leading to wilting. Furthermore, early blight, also known as dry leaf spot, can devastate crops, causing dark spots to form on leaves and fruits.

To prevent and combat these diseases, you can use preparations that are easy to make at home. One such preparation is a yeast solution used as a spray.

Why use a yeast spray?

Yeast spray is an ecological and natural solution that not only protects plants from fungal diseases but also strengthens their immunity. Yeast is rich in B vitamins, iron, and amino acids, which stimulate plant growth and improve crop quality. This makes the plants more resistant to environmental stresses such as drought or low temperatures.

How to prepare a yeast spray?

Preparing a yeast spray is straightforward and doesn't require any special skills. Simply dissolve 100 grams (3.5 oz) of fresh yeast in 10 litres (2 gallons) of water. Thoroughly mix the solution until the yeast is completely dissolved. Then pour it into a sprayer and apply it to the plants. Remember to use fresh yeast as it ensures the effectiveness of the spray. You might also add a little liquid soap to help the solution adhere better to the plant leaves and stems.

The yeast spray is best used once a week on a warm and windless day. Regular use of this natural remedy protects tomatoes and cucumbers from infections and pests, leading to better crop quality. The spray works not only as a preventive measure but also therapeutically, inhibiting the spread of existing diseases. As a result, the plants can regenerate and grow without issues.
