Salt as the key to flavour

Kathryne Taylor emphasises that to make avocado tastier, you should add at least a pinch of salt to each half of the fruit. "Bonus points? Sprinkle the avocado toast with a light sprinkle of coarse sea salt," advises Taylor. Although it may seem simple, salt can bring out the natural, richer flavours of avocado, making it more buttery and creamy.

Avocado toast is a simple dish, but there are several ways to enhance its flavour. The choice of bread depends on personal preference, but whole grain is usually better because it highlights the nutty taste of avocado and adds more fibre to the meal.

How to prepare the perfect avocado toast?

After toasting the bread, it's a good idea to mash the avocado in a bowl before applying it to the toast. Mashing the avocado directly on the bread can cause it to tear.

Adding a bit of salt to the mashed avocado improves its texture, making it smoother and easier to spread. Other simple ways to improve the flavour include rubbing raw garlic on the toast before adding avocado or adding fresh herbs such as basil, dill, or parsley.

Some people like to add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the mashed avocado for acidity and to prevent browning if any is saved for later. Adding an egg on top is also a delicious way to enrich avocado toast, making breakfast not only tasty but also healthy.
