Poland opts for logistical role in Ukraine peace efforts

Poland does not intend to deploy its troops to Ukraine during a potential ceasefire period, as Polish radio RMF FM's correspondent has learned through unofficial channels. Warsaw aims to play a different significant role instead.

According to RMF FM correspondent Katarzyna Szymańska-Borginon, informal discussions are ongoing in Brussels regarding the deployment of troops in Ukraine. This would enable the European Union to assume a role in guaranteeing a ceasefire in the conflict.

Brussels is convinced, however, that Poland will not send its troops to Ukraine. As the journalist explains, this is partly due to historical reasons – the presence of Polish troops on territories that were once part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth might be unfavourably received.

Additionally, the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border is significant. Several thousand military personnel are stationed at this crucial point. Involvement in Ukraine would likely necessitate a reduction in this area.

Poland will engage in a different way

As the RMF FM correspondent describes, Poland seeks to engage in another manner. It could act as the primary logistical support for peacekeeping forces.

Previously, Politico reported that the topic of deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine would be a subject of discussion between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron.

As Politico highlights, the meeting of the two EU leaders is taking place against a backdrop of rising concerns that during Donald Trump's forthcoming presidency, Europeans will be compelled to assume greater responsibility for military engagement in Ukraine.
