Putin eyes collaboration amid Arctic military boost
Vladimir Putin announced plans to enhance Russian forces in the Arctic, emphasising the region's importance for Moscow. The leader stated that despite growing rivalry, he sees potential for cooperation. The region's resources are becoming more accessible due to global warming.
Vladimir Putin declared the bolstering of Russian forces stationed in the Arctic to safeguard Moscow's interests in this strategic area. During a forum in Murmansk, the Russian leader emphasised that despite the increase in geopolitical competition, cooperation remains possible there.
Putin referred to President Donald Trump's plans concerning Greenland, noting that although they do not directly involve Russia, they suggest that the United States will continue its activities in the Arctic. According to the Russian leader, American ambitions in this region have deep historical roots.
The leader also expressed concern over increasing NATO activity in the Far North, which may regard the area as a potential conflict zone. Russia is monitoring the situation and preparing appropriate measures in response to these threats, he noted.
The importance of the Arctic for Russia
Putin highlighted the growing role of the Arctic for Russia and the world, noting that the region is becoming an arena of intense rivalry. Russia plans to develop trade through the northern route, shifting it towards Asia, as a response to Western sanctions.
The Russian leader called for the expansion of northern ports and the construction of a merchant fleet supported by modern icebreakers, including nuclear-powered ones. Cooperation with foreign shipyards and the purchase of new ships are essential to meet these challenges.
The Arctic holds rich fossil fuel and mineral resources, which may become more accessible as a result of global warming. By modernising its navy and reopening Soviet-era bases, Russia is strengthening its presence in the region more quickly than the West.
