Vladimir Putin made an unexpected statement overnight, proposing direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul.
The Russian leader announced that the negotiations could take place on 15th May, highlighting the role of Turkish President Recep Erdogan in peace efforts.
Putin also noted the efforts of the new US administration towards peace in Ukraine. "I would like to once again express my gratitude for the mediation services and efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis, undertaken by our foreign partners. These include China, Brazil, countries in Africa, the Middle East, and recently the new administration of the United States of America," he said.
