Real Madrid triumphs amid disgraceful Atleti fan conduct
Real Madrid hosted their local rivals, Atletico Madrid, in the first match of the Champions League round of 16. Before the match began, both teams gathered in the centre of the pitch to honour former Los Blancos player, Javier Dorado, with a minute of silence. During this time, the visiting fans caused a disturbance.
Real Madrid once again demonstrated their superiority over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Los Blancos defeated Diego Simeone's team 2-1 with goals from Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz. The only goal for the Rojiblancos was scored by Julian Alvarez.
Recently, the sad news of the death of former Real Madrid player, Javier Dorado, was reported. The Spaniard had been battling leukaemia and passed away at the age of 48. To mark his passing, his memory was honoured with a minute of silence at the Bernabeu, although not everyone respected it.
Atletico Madrid fans caused a scandal
During the minute of silence, Atletico Madrid fans started to whistle, insult Real Madrid legend Juanito, and before the match, they allegedly made Nazi gestures. According to realmadryt.pl, Rojiblancos fans sang: "Illa, illa, illa, Juanito hecho papilla," translating into English as: "Illa, illa, illa, Juanito crushed to pulp".
According to journalist Dani Garrido, before the match started, Atletico Madrid fans dressed in black jumpsuits shouted, "Atletico fans, hooligans," while performing the Nazi salute.
Spanish media erupted after the scandal caused by the fans from the northeast of Madrid. Garrido added: "They did not respect the minute of silence for the man who passed away at the age of 48 last week (...) Many people standing next to them, who unfortunately had nowhere else to go, applauded while they whistled".
