Richard Chamberlain: A cherished icon of TV and film departs
Richard Chamberlain, known for productions such as "Dr. Kildare" and "The Thorn Birds," passed away on 29th March 2025 at the age of 88. The cause of death was revealed by his former partner, Martin Rabbett.
Richard Chamberlain was a television icon and a star of productions popular in the latter half of the 20th century. According to his former partner and close friend, the cause of death was complications from a stroke. He published a farewell statement online.
"Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings lifting him to his next great adventure," we read.
For decades, Richard Chamberlain was a symbol of masculinity and the embodiment of romantic heroes. In the 1980s, he consolidated his position in Hollywood, winning a Golden Globe for his role in "The Thorn Birds," where he portrayed the character of the sinning priest, Ralph.
Although he did not replicate this success later, his roles in period films remain unforgettable. He remained professionally active for a long time and last appeared on screen in 2019 in the film "Finding Julia." He found fulfilment not only in front of the camera but also as a painter and poet. He lived in Los Angeles.
His career started in the 1950s but was interrupted by the Korean War. After returning to the USA, he gained popularity as a screen heartthrob, particularly thanks to the series "Dr. Kildare."
Richard Chamberlain has died. 22 years ago he revealed he was gay
As one of the most recognisable artists of the past generation, he had numerous female fans, though none succeeded in stealing his heart. In 2003, in his autobiography titled "Shattered Love," he revealed that he was gay.
He regarded this revelation as a significant event in both his professional and personal life. He decided to do it because he no longer wanted to hide his private life. Thanks to coming out, he became considered one of the icons of the LGBTQ+ community.
Richard Chamberlain's partner for 30 years was the aforementioned Martin Rabbett. Viewers might recognise him from productions such as "Island Son," "Bare Essence," and "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold." According to American media, they separated in 2010.
