The 75-year-old received the International Goya Award, one of the most important accolades in Spain. However, during a conversation with journalists, he began discussing the new President of the United States, Donald Trump.

We are in a very dark place in America where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States. But it’s not just in the U.S., it’s everywhere. We have to be vigilant, he commented, as quoted by rawstory.com.

Gere, known for his involvement in helping the homeless and refugees, warned in his speech about the "dark marriage of money and power."

America is experiencing a dark time, and the time has come for people to stand up. We must be vigilant about this dark marriage of money and power. It is irresponsible and corrosive that there are millionaires in charge of the United States, [it’s] a danger to the whole planet, he opined.

Gere no longer lives in the USA. Last year, he relocated to Spain with his wife and two sons. His Spanish wife was a key factor in his decision to leave the States.

They sold their house for $11 million (£9 million) and moved to Europe. The actor explained that he owed it to his wife.

For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture. She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers, he admitted.

The actor is known for films like "Pretty Woman" and "1 Days of Heaven". In 2003, he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical film for his role as a lawyer-master of manipulation with the media and public opinion in the crime musical comedy "Chicago".
