- Secretary Rubio emphasised that the Trump Administration will pursue a U.S.-PRC relationship that advances U.S. interests and puts the American people first - said the department spokesperson Tammy Bruce. - The Secretary also stressed the United States’ commitment to our allies in the region and serious concern over China’s coercive actions against Taiwan and in the South China Sea - she added.

Chinese Minister Wang Yi expressed hope that Rubio would play a constructive role in Sino-American relations. He cautioned the USA against a careless approach to the Taiwan issue, emphasising support for the existing US policy towards the island.

Rubio warns of invasion

During Senate hearings, Rubio warned of the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan by the end of the decade if there are no "dramatic" changes in the balance of power. The talks did not touch on trade issues, although President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on imports from China.

Rubio's conversation with Wang was another diplomatic contact between the USA and China. Previously, China's Vice Chairman Han Zheng met with Vice President J.D. Vance, and Trump spoke with Xi Jinping, expressing a desire to visit China.
